A Poetical Address to his Excellency William Tryon, Esq.
Governor of New York, on his departure from this province
for Great-Britain.
By a Citizen.
While gen'rous hearts, who much your worth approve,
Now try each art to testify their love;
Joyful for you the festal board prepare,
Or pour their soft addresses in your ear;
I, though obscure, and little known to fame,
Nor yet ambitious of a poet's name;
The humble tribute too of prase would bring,
And woo the muse to teach me how to sing.
. . . [8 more verses of varying length]
